UPDATE, 10 p.m. — The explosion in downtown Sun Prairie was caused by a ruptured gas main, according to WE Energies.
A contractor was working downtown and struck the main, according to a WE Energies spokesperson. They were not doing work for the utility at the time, according to the spokesperson.
Gas has been shut off in the area, and the evacuation zone has been expanded to five blocks.
UPDATE, 9:15 p.m. — Two firefighters have been injured and transported to an area hospital and a police officer has been hurt following an explosion this afternoon in downtown Sun Prairie.
Police responded at 6:21 p.m. to a report of a gas leak at the intersection of Main and Bristol streets in downtown Sun Prairie for a report of a natural gas leak, Sun Prairie Police Lt. Kevin Konopack said in a Tuesday evening July 10, 2018 news conference.
While the fire department was working on the gas leak, a building exploded, Konopacki said.
There are reports of multiple injuries, including the firefighters and police officer, and the condition of the firefighters is unknown at this time.
Firefighters currently are trying to secure the gas leak. Based on the amount of gas the was leaking, the evacuation zone has been increased to a five block area, Konapacki said.
Two downtown businesses, the Barr House and Glass Nickel Pizza suffered sever damage, Konoapacki said.
Police expect to have another briefing at 10 p.m.
UPDATE 7:20 p.m. — The Sun Prairie Police Department says firefighters are actively fighting a fire at Main Street and Bristol Street and are asking everyone living within a five-block radius to evacuate.
Police say this is a rapidly evolving situation. They’re asking everyone to avoid the area.
They say they do not know how the fire started. They say they also do not know whether anyone has been hurt.
Authorities called in mutual aid from other agencies in the area — fire, medical and law enforcement. They are also working with the Red Cross.
