Madison man indicted on federal kidnapping charges after carjacking

MADISON (WKOW) — A federal grand jury has indicted a Madison man on charges of kidnapping after police say he carjacked a Madison woman and took her to Indiana.

Police say in April, Marvin Baker ordered a 22-year-old woman to drive him to several ATMs around Madison and withdraw money from her bank account. He dropped her off near Olbrich Botanical Gardens and drove off in her car.

Three days later, police say Baker got into a car at the McDonald’s on East Washington Avenue and ordered the 56-year-old driver to head south. Four hours later, they were in Indiana. The victim convinced Baker to let her stop to go to the bathroom and she escaped.

After that, police say Baker got into the vehicle of a third victim. Surveillance video of that gave police an idea of what the car looked like. They were able to stop Baker and take him into custody.

Baker is now charged with kidnapping an individual in federal court. He’ll make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Madison July 12.
