Badgers men’s hockey to open season with a challenge

MADISON (WKOW) — The Badgers men’s hockey team is jumping right into the deep end this season. Wisconsin will face a preseason ranked opponent in 15 of the first 16 games of the season beginning with Boston College on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

Head coach Tony Granato will not have much time to mold a very young squad. The Badgers have 16 freshmen or sophomores on the 25-man roster. The youngsters do have some talent. For instance, Wisconsin will feature five NHL draft picks in the defensive corps for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Granato is hoping that the youth and talent will be a good mixture.

“We are young. We are energized. I think we have a really solid group of players. Sometimes that inexperience leads to unpredictability. Sometimes that unpredictability is exciting as well. They’re not going to look at it and say, ‘Oh my gosh. This team we’re playing is intimidating because they’ve got these players on it.’ I think our guys look at our guys and who’s our room and know how hard we’ve prepared to get ready for this season and look forward to showing Boston College what we have to offer.”

After the season opener on Friday, the Badgers will host Boston College again Saturday at 7 p.m.
