MADISON (WKOW) — Friends and family are mourning the death of a man who was murdered in a parking ramp in downtown Madison.
A group came together Monday night, just hours after police announced an arrest in the homicide. They lit candles and released balloons to pay tribute to Steven Villegas, 21. He was shot and killed in the State Street Parking Ramp early Sunday morning.
Villegas’ fiance, Arissa Wilborn, says her soon-to-be husband was not targeted, but caught in the middle of a fight he didn’t start.
“He wasn’t supposed to get shot. He wasn’t supposed to die. Nothing like that. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This was not for him,” Wilborn told 27 News.
Police say Villegas was shot after two groups got into a late-night fight in the street. Friends created a memorial outside the parking ramp.
Madison police arrested Kenyairra Gadson, 21, as a suspect in the shooting. Investigators say surveillance pictures and witness accounts helped to identify her.
