MADISON (WKOW) — After more than 20 years in the same spot at 204 Cottage Grove Road, Madison’s Pinney Branch library is moving but its permanent location won’t open until the spring of 2020.
Friday night, the current location closed its doors for the final time.
The library will be moving to an interim space across the street at the old Ace Hardware store at 211 Cottage Grove Road over the next few weeks. The library will reopen there in January of 2019.
“We’ve had so many people come in and phone in the last week asking, ‘Are you still open?’, ‘Are you still open?’,” said circulation desk clerk, Erica Kersten.
Kersten has worked for the Madison Public Libraries for almost 30 years.
“I know that ages me,” she said. “I started right out of high school.”
Kersten has worked at the Pinney location since 1995, joining shortly before they moved to the current 204 Cottage Grove Road location.
“I’m looking around this library and thinking oh yeah, this is the last day I’m going to be here,” she said.
The interim library will be across the street, in the same building it was located in when Kersten first started.
“We actually physically moved the books ourselves at that time,” she said.
Librarians are already rearranging and labeling the books for the move.
“We’ll be using hundreds of carts to move the collection over,” said Library Supervisor Sarah Lawton.
This time, the library will have the help of professional movers.
“I don’t think I’ll miss the grunt work,” said Kersten.
They’ll be in the interim space for about a year. “It will be a slightly smaller space for the next year but it will make the new library that much better,” Lawton said.
Lawton says they’re designing the library for the community. “We’ve been working really hard to reach out to groups that don’t use the library and people that we don’t see everyday — to look at how we can create a library that is inclusive,” she said.
If you had any books on hold at the Pinney library, those were moved to the Hawthorne branch at 2707 E. Washington Avenue.
The permanent library will be at on Cottage Grove Road near Dempsey Road.
People who used the Pinney Library can still use their library cards, and return books to other South Central Library System locations.
