National snow sculpting contest in Wisconsin

LAKE GENEVA (WKOW) — Every winter, Lake Geneva hosts Winterfest, a nine-day festival that celebrates art, winter, family, and fun.

The U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition will be held January 26th through Feb. 3rd in front of the Riviera building and at Flat Iron Park, as part of the annual celebration.

“Teams from all over the united states, from Alaska to Maine, they come and they win their state titles and then they come here to win the United States Title,” said Joe Tominaro, Director of Marketing for Visit Lake Geneva.

For the snow sculptors, Grand Geneva Resort & Spa provides about 100 tons of manufactured snow for the competition. The Lake Geneva Public Works Department moves the snow to the Rivera building and Flat Iron Park to get it into position for the competition.

The snow sculpting teams come from throughout the country to compete in Lake Geneva. Power tools are not allowed so artists are armed with hand tools, chisels, and improvised utensils.

Fifteen teams of talented snow sculptors and artists from around the country gather to compete for a national title.

“They do a sketch and then they do a clay model, and that’s what they have to work from. So they are judged on intricate design, how close it is to scale of the model. On the art side, they’re judged by their peers, so the cool thing about this is the judges are actually the sculptors themselves!” said Tominaro.

The entire competition is open to the public, so Winterfest attendees can actually watch the artists at work!

While there you can also enjoy a Human Dog Sled Race, The Abominable Snow Race, magic shows, helicopter rides, and a chili cook-off!
