UPDATE: Good Samaritan killed by drunk driver was Lake Mills Fire Dept. captain

UPDATE (WKOW) — The man killed in the crash on the Beltline Monday night was a Lake Mills Fire Department captain.

The Lake Mills city attorney, Daniel Drescher, confirms to 27 News Captain. Chris Truman was the man killed. He had pulled over to help another driver in the snowstorm and was hit by another vehicle. Monona Police arrested the driver of that vehicle for Homicide by Intoxicated  Use of a Vehicle.

Dreschler says Capt. Truman was a tenured officer with Lake Mills and had been with the department for at least 13 years.

“He was an excellent person. Everyone around here is very upset,” Drescher told 27 News.


MONONA (WKOW) — Monona police arrest a man for allegedly driving under the influence and killing a Good Samaritan who was trying to help another crash victim.

Monona Police say Monday evening just before 7:00 p.m., officers responded to the Beltline near the bridge over the Yahara River for a crash. They determined a driver got out of his vehicle to help someone involved in a minor crash. That man was then struck by another vehicle. He later died at the hospital.

Monona Police say they the driver of the vehicle that struck the man was arrested for Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle. Dane County Jail records show, and a supervisor confirms with 27 News, the only person arrested and brought to the jail by the Monona Police Department Monday night is Samuel Patrick Cremers.

Cremers’ charges in the jail roster are listed as Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle and Injury by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Cremers is 28 and from Columbus.

The name of the man who was killed has not been released.


MONONA (WKOW) — Multiple vehicles were involved in a deadly accident that happened Monday evening on the Beltline, according to the Monona Police Department.

Authorities said a single vehicle crash happened at 6:50 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Beltline, near the bridge over the Yahara River. The driver of a second car stopped to help. When he got out of the vehicle he was hit by another car before officers got to the scene.

The man who was hit was taken to the hospital with serious injuries where he died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the third vehicle involved, who hit the man, stayed on scene and was arrested for Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle.

Names are not being released at this time.
