Madison church opens as warming shelter during frigid temperatures

MADISON (WKOW) — First United Methodist Church in downtown Madison opened Friday to serve as an emergency warming center specifically designated for families and single women.

“This one seems a lot more personal, I’ve talked to four or five different people from the church and I felt like I actually knew them so that’s a good thing that makes me feel comfortable,” said Tashianna Skyes, a mother of four.

The church worked with The Beacon to shuttle families to and from the Salvation Army shelter. Single men can visit the Grace men’s drop-in shelter on West Washington Ave.

The church will not be open on Sunday. Organizers say they are discussing opening as an emergency warming center on another day during the extreme cold, but when that may happen has not yet been determined.
