19 displaced after Madison apartment building fire

MADISON (WKOW) — 19 people in Madison were displaced Sunday after an apartment building fire.

The Madison Fire Department says crews responded to the 4700 block of Cottage Grove Rd around 6 a.m., after a resident called 911 to report smoke in the building.

Upon arrival, crews heard smoke alarms sounding and found people evacuating.

Crews located the origin of the fire in an apartment on the second floor and extinguished it quickly, according to Fire Prevention Officer Amanda Hornung.

Madison Metro dispatched a bus in order for the residents to have a place to stay warm, and the American Red Cross responded to provide blankets and additional assistance to those displaced.

Fire crews say the cause of the fire remains under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
