What you need in your car when temperatures go below zero

(WKOW) — With the frigid temperatures, you want to make sure your car is prepared with supplies in case in you get stranded on the roads.

Ready Wisconsin suggests preparing a winter car kit in case you get stuck. Some of the kit items include:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Multipurpose utility kit
  • First aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Extra clothing such as pants, sweatshirts and gloves
  • Shovel
  • Hand warmers
  • Windshield ice scraper

During these winter months, Ready Wisconsin also suggests making kits for your home and for your pets.

Deputy Eric Novotny with the Dane County Sheriff’s office said if you run off the road and get stuck, you should stay in your car and call for help.

“You get stuck in a snow bank and half your car is out in the lane of traffic trying to get out and push yourself out isn’t a good idea,” Novonty said. “The odds of something bad happening increases exponentially.”
