BELOIT (WKOW) — A father and daughter team drew praise after shoveling lots of snow to help out their local fire department.
Leroy Helminiak and his nine-year-old daughter Adison dug out approximately 30 fire hydrants in Beloit’s Hackett neighborhood Tuesday.
Three significant snow falls in just a few weeks dumped more than a foot of snow on southern Wisconsin and buried many area fire hydrants.
Fire departments have been trying to get the word out about the need to clear the area around hydrants so crews do not have to waste valuable time digging out room for their hoses when responding to a fire.
“It saves us a lot of time to have the hydrants cleared when we are responding to a fire,” the Beloit Fire Department wrote on Facebook.
The department was grateful for the Helminiaks’ efforts writing, “Thank you to both of you for showing your care for the community!”
The do-good duo took a break from shoveling Wednesday and Thursday because of the historic cold, but Adison said she was motivated to go out again on Saturday after the weather gets warmer.
