Plea bargain unlikely as Badger football player faces trial

MADISON (WKOW) – A source with knowledge of the investigation says a plea bargain to resolve sexual assault charges against Badger football player Quintez Cephus is unlikely, with Cephus scheduled to stand trial Monday.

Authorities say Cephus sexually assaulted two fellow UW students in August.  Cephus has maintained his innocence.

The source tells 27 News the nature of the evidence of the case and the proximity of the trial date are factors in why the case is unlikely to be resolved.  The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source is not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

Court records show defense attorneys listed Cephus’ teammate Faion Hicks as a possible trial witness.  Prosecutors had already listed Badger players Danny Davis and A.J. Taylor as witnesses.

Cephus is suspended from the team and missed the entire 2017-2018 football season.
