Community gathers for discussion on human trafficking

FITCHBURG (WKOW) — A local organization is hoping to raise awareness about the second-leading crime in the world that’s a problem right here in Wisconsin, too.

SlaveFree Madison hosted a panel discussion on human trafficking at the Fitchburg Public Library Sunday afternoon.

National advocate Theresa Flores shared her story about being trafficked.

She says if someone feels like they’re being groomed for sexual exploitation they should reach out.

“Just find a person that you trust, a teacher, a law enforcement agency, a nurse, a doctor, someone that you can talk to about it. The worst case scenario is that he will take you then and sell you to men all across the country,” she said.

If you know someone who is a victim of human trafficking, you can contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline for help at 1 (888) 373-7888.
