Beloit police seek man seen with homicide victim before his death

UPDATE (WKOW) — Beloit police are looking for a man who was seen on surveillance video with the victim in a deadly shooting Saturday in Beloit.

James M. Tomten, 28, of Janesville was found shot to death in an SUV on the 800 block of Vine Street. Tomten was in the driver’s seat and the car was still running. Police believe he was shot and killed by someone who was also in the vehicle with him.

Police released surveillance video from outside a business on the east side of Beloit showing the beige Cadillac Escalade earlier in the day. The video shows a man in a red sweatshirt, blue jeans and red tennis shoes walking near the SUV.

Police are hoping to speak to the person to find out what happened Saturday morning and whether it could provide any clues about the murder.

“[The man] was with the homicide victim. Our hope is that he will come forward or someone will identify him so we can talk with him about what he may or may not know about the victim’s activities,” said Capt. Thomas Stigler, with Beloit police.

Neighbors on Vine Street said around noon Saturday they saw a car they didn’t recognize pull up without issue and they didn’t see or hear anything out of place at first.

After the vehicle was parked there for hours and someone saw the unconscious man inside, they called police. Police say that information from neighbors determined the shooting took place about 12:20 p.m.

Police believe the person who shot Tomten knows him.

“This was not a random act where somebody was walking around shooting guns. There was a relationship between these two people and the activities that they were involved in probably led to this crime that occurred,” Stigler said.

If you have any information about the man seen in the surveillance video, or if you saw the SUV at some point before the shooting, police ask that you call them to help with the investigation. Contact investigators at (608) 364-6803.
