Regents searching for repeat crown at state swim and dive meet

MADISON (WKOW) — For the past year, the Madison West Regents have held the crown as the top Division 1 boys swimming and diving team in the state. On Saturday, Madison West will be the favorite to repeat as state champions.

“I mean there is a little pressure, but we are feeling good,” says senior Wes Jekel. “We have a lot of guys near the top. I think we are just really competitive. We just love to race. That goes a long way.”

Jekel is one of two current Regents who won an individual state title last year. Madison West is also the defending champion in two relays.

“This group is a very cohesive group, and the state team is comprised of juniors and seniors. So, they have all been at the state meet before,” says head coach Amanda Ellmaker.

They have plenty of experienced talent but a slightly different look under their first-year head coach.

“It’s a lot of the same guys, but it’s a different feel though,” says senior Jaden Weiss. “A new coach, we lost a big key senior last year. It was a little different in the beginning, but we adjusted and right now we are really feeling good.”

The WIAA State Boys Swim and Dive Meet begins Friday at the UW Natatorium in Madison with Division 2. Division 1 will be held on Saturday.
