Portage man arrested for killing dog with a hammer

TOWNSHIP OF LEWISTON (WKOW) — A rural Portage man killed a dog with a hammer after he was upset with it for urinating in the house, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials say, on Saturday, March 16, they received a called from a woman at the Oakwood Estates trailer park in the Township of Lewiston for a disorderly conduct complaint.

A woman caller told authorities that 31-year-old Brandon Shearer was at her house and upset. She said that he had killed her dog by hitting it in the head with a hammer.

The say when deputies spoke with Shearer, he told them that he was upset with the dog for urinating and defecating in the house so he took the dog outside to put it down. They say Shearer reported that he hit the dog in the head with a roofing hammer several times. He then took deputies to the location of the deceased dog, according to the sheriff’s office.

Shearer was arrested and charged with Mistreatment of animals/cause death, Disorderly Conduct, Domestic Abuse, and Theft of Movable Property.
