MARSHALL (WKOW) — The death of a Cottage Grove man who had been reported missing before being discovered dead in January in a Marshall field has been ruled accidental.
Kurt Meyer, 47, had been reported missing Jan. 10 before his body was found a week later.
Marshall police say they received final reports April 9 from the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office which listed the cause of death as accidental due to long exposure to the weather and intoxication.
The police department has closed its investigation.
Dane County court records from January show searches of the field and the car of Meyer were granted by a judge on the suspicion of a first-degree intentional homicide took place.
Search warrant affidavits show approximately $100 was found on and near Meyer’s body. But they also state Meyer’s pants were covered in dirt, unzipped, and one of his shoes had been removed.
Records show the 47-year-old Meyer was last seen by a roommate Jan. 10 leaving his apartment with an unidentified person. Records state Meyer’s girlfriend contacted police that day and reported Meyer as a missing person.
Authorities say Meyer’s body was found in the field near Fir Lane Jan. 17. The Dane County medical examiner says there were no signs of outward trauma to the body.
