The reigning AUDL national champions, the Madison Radicals, will host their home opener this weekend at Breese Stevens Field.
The Radicals are already 1-0 to start the 2019 season, after opening up the season with a win at Indianapolis. The team returns 19 of its 20 starters from last season, so the expectations are high.
This year, they can enjoy coming off a national championship season, instead of narrowly missing the title or the title game – which they did the 5 seasons before that.
“It feels great,” said Radicals coach Tim DeByl. “There’s a lot of guys that have been on the team for 7 years, like 11 people. So those guys are basically aging out a little bit. They’re going to retire soon. So to actually win one was really great. It felt good for everybody and now you come in with a whole different feeling about, like, oh now here’s our chance to defend [the title]. It just feels very different than other years and people are working a lot harder than they ever have. So it’s exciting to have a different vibe.”
The Radicals host the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds on Saturday at 6pm. The new concession stand will be open at Breese Stevens Field, but the main gate will be closed due to construction. A side gate will allow fans inside.
