TRAFFIC ALERT: University Ave construction begins in Middleton

MIDDLETON (WKOW) — Your morning commute may get a little longer this summer if you travel through Middleton.

Construction starts Monday on University Avenue. All lanes will be closed from Parmenter Street to Park Street. University will still be open up to Park Street from the east and west.

Businesses will still be accessible on either side of the construction zone, but there are a number of houses in that stretch.

Neighbors are preparing for some hassles.

“The only other inconvenience, I don’t know yet, is with the school buses. My kids are the only kids that catch the bus on the street and my other son walks around that corner, so he would have to walk on the grass all the way down. But that’s just for a couple of months. Other than that, it’s not too much of a bother,” said Chandra Davis, who lives on University.

Public works officials say they don’t have marked detours, but drivers using the Beltline will be routed on Century Avenue to Allen Boulevard.

Metro bus riders who take route 71 (Park Street/Franklin Avenue) will also be impacted. There will be temporary stops on the east side of Park Street, north of University, the north side of Franklin and the south side of Franklin, both east of Park Lawn.

The road work is a partnership between the city of Middleton and Dane County to reconstruct the road, building a new curb and gutter, replacing pavement and sidewalks and improving utilities.

There will also be new left turn lanes and traffic signals at the Parmenter Street intersection.

Construction work is expected to last until early July, generally between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There will be some work scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays.
