Just in time for Spring planting season, local gardener shares his best tomato-growing secrets

MADISON (WKOW) — Now that it’s May it’s time to start thinking about planting some veggies in your garden, especially tomatoes!

On Wednesday, Steve Stumbras of Purple Cow Organics in Waunakee joined the Wake Up Wisconsin team to talk about the history of tomatoes and share some of his best tomato-growing secrets. To see his full interview, watch above.

Some growing tips Stumbras shared include:

  • Plant tomato plants deep in garden beds.
  • If planting in a container, use a large container, at least five gallons.
  • Trim the lower leaves after planting.
  • Add some plant-based compost to provide minerals, biology, and carbon needed for healthy vegetables.

Stumbras says enhancing the biological aspect of the soil improves plant health, nutrient density, and taste.
