UPDATE: US 151 reopens after deadly crash

UPDATE (WKOW) — US 151 in Columbia County is back open hours after a deadly crash.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the stretch near Highway V reopened shortly before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.  It had been closed since shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

UPDATE (WKOW) — A large cargo truck didn’t slow down for slower traffic in front of it, triggering a deadly chain-reaction crash, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said.

Two people were flown to hospitals, three others were taken by ambulances, according to authorities.

COLUMBIA COUNTY (WKOW) — One person is dead and two others are severely injured following a bad crash Tuesday.

At least five vehicles, including a large box truck, were severely damaged during a chain reaction crash on Highway 151, southwest of Columbus, during evening rush hour.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. where Hwy 151 passes underneath Highway 73.

A 27 News Photojournalist located several emergency medical vehicles at the scene, including one from the coroner’s office. Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has not released more information about the status of anyone in the vehicles.

Two vehicles were seriously damaged and lying in the median on either side of the highway. Another, indistinguishable vehicle, was smashed between the large truck and a silver minivan.

Officials warned drivers to expect long delays.
