Madison breaks ground on new fleet services building

MADISON (WKOW) — Next year, Madison city vehicles will be housed in a brand new facility.

City leaders broke ground on Thursday.

City Fleet Services is currently located on North First Street in Madison. The vehicles will move to the new location on Nakoosa Trail when the building is complete. Construction is expected to be complete in September 2020.

The new building will be a combined facility. It will merge the existing fire maintenance facility from East Washington Avenue, the Communications Radio Shop from Sayle Street and the Fleet Services Facility from First Street. Leaders say the building will act as a place for service repair for public safety vehicles, emergency vehicles, public works vehicles, equipment, fire trucks and other service cars, trucks and equipment.

Madison fleet superintendent Mahanth Joishy says the city has focused on making the new building more environmentally sustainable.

“We are all looking forward to moving to this new, updated facility next year,” Joishy said. “It will be much more modern. It will have a lot of green features in it.

The city of Madison will work to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental design (LEED) certification when building the new facility.

To earn a LEED Certification-Silver, the building will feature the following sustainable and green features:

The former fleet services building will be renovated to house the new Madison Public Market, set to open in Fall 2021.
