Local athletes claim state titles on first day of WIAA State Track and Field Meet

LA CROSSE (WKOW) — Several local athletes earned their way to the top of the podium on the first day of the WIAA State Track and Field Meet. The majority of the championships will be decided on Saturday.

In Division 1, Middleton’s 4 x 800 meter relay team took gold. The squad of Michael Madoch, Zach Lettel, Braedon Gilles and Caleb Easton won in a time of 7:48.65. Madison East’s Parker Buske won the long jump with a leap of 18’9.5″. Ladell Cannon from Madison La Follette took triple jump gold with a mark of 47’3.75″. Isaac Morris from Parkview won the wheelchair shot put state title for a second straight year with a throw of 24’11.5″.

In Division 2, Monroe’s Cade Meyer took home a state title in the high jump with a leap of 6’09”. Abby Rynes of Richland Center won the pole vault with a mark of 11’06”.

In Division 3, the Benton Co-op claimed a pair of titles. Matt Davis won the high jump with a leap of 6’6″. Kayci Martensen won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:02.53.
