Athlete dies while competing in Lake Mills Triathlon

LAKE MILLS (WKOW) — Police say a 59-year-old man died while competing in the Lake Mills Triathlon Sunday morning.

The Lake Mills Police Department was notified that a participant from Elkhorn, Wisconsin went under the water while participating in the swim portion of the triathlon around 7:45 a.m., according to a news release.

Rescue personnel from the event pulled him to shore and performed resuscitation, but authorities say he was later pronounced deceased at Fort Atkinson Memorial hospital.

Officials say the initial investigation indicates that a medical event occurred prior to going under the water, and it is not being treated as a drowning at this time.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released identification.
