New pavilion honors Girl Scouts killed while picking up highway trash

CHIPPEWA FALLS (WKOW) — Hundreds of people in Chippewa Falls honored a Girl Scout troop Sunday evening nearly 9 months after a mother and four scouts were killed while picking up trash along a highway.

Lake Hallie Ball Park presented a new pavilion in honor of former softball players Jayna Kelley and Autumn Helgenson, who were both part of Troop 35.

The pavilion creates a space that can bring people together while remembering the girls.

“We want people to be able to come in and sit here and be able to look at their pictures and see their names up there, even generations from now,” said Jayna’s father Brian. “If they don’t know who they were, they’ll ask about it and learn about them and we’ll all remember them when we come here.”

Brian says he’s thankful for all the donations and overwhelming support that went into the tribute.
