Local author writes book to encourage women battling cancer

Joanie Shawhan, a registered nurse and ovarian cancer survivor, felt a pull to use her own “cancer journey” to support and encourage other women experiencing the same situation. Shawhan said while she was going through treatment, there were no support groups or places she could go to have her questions answered. That’s when she was inspired to write In Her Shoes, Dancing in the Shadow of Cancer. 

In her book, she tells her own story as well as the stories of 11 other women battling various forms of cancer. Shawhan said she wrote the book as if it was the guide she needed while she was going through chemotherapy.
