MADISON (WKOW) — A sculpture was unveiled Friday honoring a UW-Madison alumna and hero of resistance to the Nazi regime.
Mildred Fish-Harnack graduated from UW-Madison in 1925 and became the only American civilian to be executed on the direct order of Adolf Hitler.
Madison mayor Satya Rhodes Conway spoke at the ceremony, saying honoring Fish-Harnack’s resistance is particularly important today.
“Because we have people in camps on our borders, because we have yet to fully face the legacy of the camps that were in this country during the war. Because never again is now.”
The sculpture now stands in Marshall Park.
