Area advocacy centers like Safe Harbor work to minimize the trauma felt by victims of child abuse cases. Jennifer Ginsburg, executive director, joined us to talk about the nonprofit’s mission and how to get involved.
“Rather than having a child be interviewed in the back of a police car or in the principal’s office, they come to Safe Harbor, a friendly environment, where they’re interviewed by a trained forensic interviewer to get all the information about what happened,” Ginsburg said. “Children blame themselves and are worried they’re going to be in trouble. So it’s really important to create an environment where they feel safe and secure and able to talk about what happened.”
Ginsburg said Safe Harbor is a private nonprofit, so they fundraise about 40% of their annual budget. Events like the upcoming Labor Day Dash, a 5k or 10k run at Vilas Park, help raise funds to contribute to their mission.
