THURSDAY AT 10: Law agencies turn to new technology to solve neighborhood crimes

MADISON (WKOW) — Several law agencies in southern Wisconsin are using new technology to help them solve crimes in their communities.

The Neighbors app by Ring will provide agencies, like The Dane County Sheriff’s Office (DSCO), with real-time, local crime, and safety information.

“Once we learned about it and how it could benefit us in investigations we certainly decided that it was in all of our best interest to be a part of this,” said DSCO Spokesperson Elise Schaffer.

The app already has millions of users and has been instrumental in catching package thieves, stopping burglaries, and car thieves.

One of those users is Stephanie Herfel, who lives on Madison’s east side. She bought a Ring doorbell and started using the app after a scary situation.

“I think [the app] just allows us to have that neighborhood watch program, without putting ourselves in harm’s way,” said Herfel.

Thursday on 27 News at 10, Wake Up Wisconsin Anchor Nick Buffo is digging deeper into how the app works and how local law agencies are using it to keep local neighborhoods safe.
