Navy veteran walking across America to raise suicide awareness

BELOIT (WKOW) — A U.S. Navy veteran’s walk across America brought him to Beloit Thursday.

Tom Zurhellen stopped at Beloit College, where he went to school.

He’s walking across the country to raise awareness about suicide and homelessness among veterans.

He does 22 miles a day to recognize the 22 veterans who commit suicide each day.

Zurhellen says it’s been an amazing experience so far.

“I think the most surprising thing is how nice and gracious everyone has been even before they hear about the cause we’re walking for, just wanting to help and wanting to help out a stranger I think it’s really great.”

Zurhellen started in Portland, OR and plans to end in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, NY in late August.
