UPDATE: State Street shooting ruled accidental, man arrested

UPDATE (WKOW) — Madison police say Wednesday’s shooting on State Street has been ruled accidental.

Investigators say a woman got into an SUV and a gun went off. She was hit in the chest and taken to the hospital. Officers say she is in stable condition.

Police initially detained the driver of the SUV, who they have identified as Francis Kimani. After questioning, Kimani was arrested and is now facing a charge of injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon.

Kimani has a valid concealed carry permit, according to a police spokesperson.

UPDATE (WKOW) — A woman was shot Wednesday afternoon on the 200 block of State Street after getting into an SUV with someone she knows, according to Joel DeSpain, public information officer for the Madison Police Department.

The woman, who police say is in her 40s, got into the SUV and then a gun went off, hitting her in the upper torso.

Police described the woman as alert when they arrived but said she “suffered a serious injury.” She was taken to a hospital.

One witness told 27 News that the woman seemed strangely calm despite the wound, and was able to put herself on the stretcher.

State Street reopened before 4:30 p.m.

Police are working to determine if the gun was fired accidentally or with intent to shoot the woman.

The man in the SUV, also in his 40s, is in police custody for questioning.

MADISON (WKOW) — Madison police are on the scene of a shooting in the 200 block of State Street.

The police department tweeted shortly before 3 p.m. that one person has been taken to the hospital.
