MADISON (WKOW) — Police arrested a Madison man just before midnight Wednesday after taking a call from a homeowner who struggled with an attempted intruder earlier in the night on the 1800 block of East Washington Avenue.
Daniel F. Cleary, 36, is in police custody because he matched a description of the would-be burglar given by the homeowner earlier in the night, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.
The owner was enjoying a beer and watching a movie with his wife when he heard the side door of his home jiggle. The homeowner went out the front door to investigate and saw a stranger trying to get into the house, police said.
While on the phone with 911, the homeowner struggled with the stranger and gave dispatchers a description of the attempted intruder.
In the scuffle, the stranger lost his backpack but got away, police said.
Officers found Cleary, who allegedly claimed he was only trying to get into the house to use a phone. Police arrested him for attempted burglary.
