Janesville police K-9 runs down suspect wanted for retail thefts

JANESVILLE (WKOW) — A Janesville man with 12 outstanding warrants was arrested Thursday evening after a police K-9 caught him following a foot chase.

Alexander Schenck, 27, faces charges of fleeing an officer, resisting arrest and retail theft.

Rock County Dispatch received a call about 7:15 p.m. Aug. 15 reporting a suspicious person.

The caller said they saw a man switching license plates of a vehicle in the parking lot of a business.

The caller continued watching as the man drove into a different business parking lot and had removed the license plates of the same vehicle, according to a police news release.

Police, along with a K-9, located the man driving south on Highway 51 near Black Bridge Road.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled the scene.  The vehicle then continued southbound on Parker Court where the driver of the vehicle got out and ran.

The K-9 Fred caught the driver after a short foot chase.

The driver of the vehicle was later identified as Schenck, who was transported to an area hospital for injuries as a result of the K-9 apprehension.

Officers later learned Schenck was involved in retail theft incidents at Farm and Fleet of Janesville and had outstanding charges from other retail thefts at Woodman’s.

Schenck was currently wanted on 12 outstanding warrants through Rock County. Schenck was arrested and held at the Rock County Jail pending jail court.
