MCFARLAND (WKOW) — The McFarland Spartans enter the 2019 season with a target on their backs. McFarland went 9-0 a season ago to claim the Rock Valley Conference championship and has high expectations again.
Those expectations start on the defensive end. Last season, McFarland only allowed 12.4 points per game in the regular season. Head coach Paul Ackley says he has a strong core returning from that defensive unit.
“We’re bringing back more defensively this year than offense. I like our returners. Probably our strongest part of our defense right now is our defensive line. We play a 3-4 front. So, the two defensive ends and the nose tackle were all all-conference kids last year.”
The Spartans defense will be tested immediately. They host Edgerton in the opener on Friday. The Crimson Tide finished second in the conference a year ago.
“I think that is a good test for us. We’ve all had the same amount of practices. We’ve had one scrimmage. We’re ready to go. They’re a talented group of players. They’re well coached. We know we have to be on our A-game on Friday night when they come to town.”
