Man with handgun tried to force entry to Madison hotel room, police say

MADISON (WKOW) — Madison police are looking for a man they say threatened another person with a handgun and burglarized an east side hotel early Thursday morning.

A stranger knocked on the door of a room at the Red Roof Inn at 4830 Hayes Road on Madison’s east side around 1 a.m.

Police say when the man staying in the room answered the door, the stranger pointed a gun at the man while trying to force his way inside. The guest closed the door and kept the would-be intruder out.

At about the same time guests in another room reported a wallet and purse missing after they left their room unlocked while visiting a different suite, according to the incident report.

One of the people staying in the burglarized rooms reported their credit card was used at a Fish Hatchery Road gas station.

Police describe the suspect as having a dark complexion, between five-foot eight-inches and five-foot nine-inches tall, weighing between 150 and 170 pounds, with shoulder-length dreadlocks and facial stubble, according to a Madison Police Department incident report. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored short sleeve shirt, blue jeans and dark Nike shoes.

Police said they are hoping to get video from the hotel and gas station to identify the burglar.
