Madison recognizes International Overdose Day

MADISON (WKOW) — Communities around the world are remembering those who’ve died from drug overdoses.

It’s International Overdose Awareness Day.

Safe Communities Madison-Dane County had a booth set up this morning at Dane County Farmers’ Market, where they handed out Narcan and flags to add to a memorial display across from Olbrich Gardens.

They say their focus is on reducing stigma and saving lives in Wisconsin.

“We are being hit particularly hard, among other states nationwide. We see a lot of overdoses here in Madison, overdose deaths as well. And anything we can do to prevent that, we’re going to continue to advocate for that,” said Kristina Vacarro, an event coordinator.

There was also a memorial gathering and observance at Olbrich Park to honor loved ones lost to overdose.
