Good Samaritan stops Madison robbery, police say

MADISON (WKOW) — A woman has her wallet back and a man is in jail for stealing it thanks to the actions of a fast-acting bystander in downtown Madison Tuesday afternoon.

Kyle W. Haag, 34, is in the Dane County Jail for disorderly conduct and robbery, according to an incident report from the Madison Police Department.

Haag allegedly unzipped a pocket of a backpack and stole a wallet belonging to a 22-year-old woman as she walked down the 500 block of University Avenue before 5 p.m.

The woman called for help and a 21-year-old man from Kentucky answered by chasing after the thief. Haag allegedly threatened to kill him and threw a punch. The Good Samaritan defended himself and punched back and took the robber to the ground.

Other people came to help hold the thief down until police arrived. Haag, according to police, freed himself and managed to run a short distance before the group stopped him again.

Police arrived, arrested Haag, returned the wallet and, along with others in the area, comforted the woman.
