UPDATE (WKOW) — Authorities are asking people in Columbia County to be aware after a man died in his home Friday.
“It’s quiet out here, you don’t really anticipate anything like that happening around here,” Debbie Elert, who lives next door, said.
It was a tense night for her as law enforcement vehicles race down Bradley road in the Town of Leeds.
“We went upstairs and saw some lights going on at the house down the road, just wondering oh my god what’s going on,” Elert said.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, they were investigating a suspicious death.
Right before 9:30 Friday night, they got a call from a woman saying her husband had been shot.
They say she told them her husband had taken his gun to investigate strange sounds in their basement.
Moments later, she heard a gunshot and found her husband dead.
The Sheriff’s Office immediately went to investigate.
“They ended up in our yard with flashlights, searching around with the dogs smelling,” Elert said. “I’m not exactly sure if they were looking for pieces of evidence or if somebody had ran from the house.
She says it’s rare to see other cars on Bradley Road, let alone a suspicious death investigation happening less than a quarter mile from her front door.
That’s why she says she’s unnerved by this whole situation.
“It was scary so I wasn’t really sure if we’re safe or what,” Elert said. “My mind can go wild thinking about what really happened over there, but I guess we’ll all find out eventually.”
A K9 searched the area but didn’t find anyone.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone who was in that neighborhood Friday night, and saw anything suspicious between 8 and 10, to call them with any information.
LEEDS (WKOW) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 35-year-old man in Columbia County.
Columbia County sheriff’s officials say a woman called 911 shortly before 9:30 p.m. Friday, September 27, saying her husband had been shot.
Deputies and EMS crews were sent to the home on Bradley Road and found the man in the basement. The wife and a small child were hiding in another room, unhurt.
Authorities say the woman told a dispatcher her family heard some noises in the basement and thought someone was in the house. Her husband grabbed a gun and went to the basement to check out what was going on. The woman heard a gunshot and saw her husband dead.
Deputies searched the area with the Columbia County K9 Unit, but no one was found.
Sheriff Roger Brandner says investigators are doing an autopsy on Sunday. Right now, they’re saying it’s an active and ongoing investigation into a suspicious death.
The sheriff’s office is asking the public for information if you might have been in this area on Friday night from 8:00pm until 10:00pm and saw anything suspicious. This could be people walking on roadways or suspicious vehicles parked or driving in this area.
