UPDATE: Fuse failure causes power outages in Dane County

UPDATE (WKOW) — Fuses at the Oregon substation in Dane County failed Sunday afternoon causing a chain reaction of power outages across the area, according to a spokesperson at Alliant Energy.

Alliant said outages in Oregon caused a handful of other substations to shut down after the communication system failed, which officials said shouldn’t have happened.

Scott Reigstad of Alliant Energy said they will continue to investigate but are already planning to install a new transformer and fuse’s in Oregon to prevent this from happening again.

UPDATE (WKOW) — Power has been restored for the customers in Dane County who were in the dark Sunday afternoon.

The repair was done electronically after 5 p.m., according to an Alliant Energy spokesperson.

UPDATE (WKOW) — According to Alliant Energy’s outage map, power has been restored to thousands of people. As of 4:15 p.m., there are about 4,000 customers still in the dark south of Verona and in Oregon.

An Alliant Energy spokesperson says crews are still looking for the source of the outage but they’re running power through a different route right now, to get the lights back on for residents.

They’re still hoping to have power restored to everyone by 6 p.m.

MADISON (WKOW) — Power outages are being reported to the south and west of Madison.

According to Alliant Energy, equipment failure around 1:33 p.m. is to blame for the power outages affecting people in the southern part of Dane County.

Four substations are currently down, leaving customers in Madison, Oregon, Brooklyn, Verona, Stoughton, Evansville, and Belleville with no power.

According to the Alliant Energy outage map, Oregon has roughly 6,700 people without power, and Brooklyn has about 1,500 people in the dark.

Madison also has about 1,200 customers dealing with no power and Verona has over 1,000 people without power.

Stoughton, Evansville, and Belleville all have less than 500 people with no electricity.

Crews are currently looking at power lines to pinpoint the exact location to fix the power outage. It could be about 6 p.m. before power is restored.
