UW Homecoming Committee removes video from social media after backlash

MADISON (WKOW) — The University of Wisconsin-Madison Homecoming Committee has taken a video down from social media after members of the university community pointed out the lack of diversity.

The recent video was posted by the Homecoming Committee leading up to the school’s homecoming weekend on Oct. 12. Homecoming is organized by the committee, which is sponsored by the Wisconsin Alumni Association. It has since been removed from social media.

UW-Madison senior Payton Wade took to her own social media after she saw the video, and expressed her disappointment in the video, saying that it made her feel “unwanted.”

“There’s so many people on the Homecoming Committee and the fact that no one saw that this was an issue, that there were no students of color represented in the video, that’s an issue,” she told 27 News.

Wade is a member of historically black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, which she said participated in the video. But she said none of the footage made it into the final product.
