Local groups helping to restore land in Dane County

DANE COUNTY (WKOW) — Alliant Energy is teaming up with the Clean Lakes Alliance to help keep runoff from making its way into Lake Mendota.

Earlier this year Dane County purchased a farm just north of Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Alliant Energy contribute a $100,000 grant to Clean Lakes Alliance’s Protect, Restore, Preserve Fund.

Clean Lakes Alliance has a $200,000 fundraising goal that would go towards this project and other restoration projects.

“Dollars donated will go directly to projects like this one and in the Pheasant Branch area,” said James Tye, Executive Director of Clean Lakes Alliance. “In addition to funds, it’s important for organizations and volunteers to do the actual work. We host about 30 volunteer days a year from Fall, Spring and Summer.”

The plan is to turn the 160 acre plot of land into prairie and add flood mitigation mechanisms to prevent a projected nearly 5-million gallons of water from reaching the Yahara River Watershed.
