Forward Madison FC claimed USL League One’s last postseason berth just this last Saturday on the final day of the regular season. That’s when they took down the playoff’s No. 2 seed, Lansing Ignite FC, to punch that ticket to the postseason. This team says they are excited to see if they can extend their inaugural season beyond the semifinals.
“Everybody’s pretty pumped up,” said midfielder J.C. Banks after practice on Wednesday. “It’s what we’ve been working on all year so excited to get it under way.”
“We’d be lying if we didn’t say one of our goals was to make the playoffs in year one,” said head coach Daryl Shore. “It hasn’t been easy but the guys have done a really good job of sticking with it all season.”
The season didn’t start out well for this flock. The flamingos went 2-6-3 in April and May, but rebounded to go 9-3-4 over June, July and August. Over their last five games, the team is 3-0-2 – so momentum is on their side.
“I think we’ve been through a lot this year,” said Banks. “I think the start we had wasn’t one that wanted to have. A couple things didn’t go our way. But I think the past month or so things have been going our way a little bit and we have to keep that going, but the guys have the fight.”
“If you look at almost every sport here in America, it’s the team that sneaks into the playoffs that has a little bit momentum going, that’s the team nobody wants to face,” said defender Connor Tobin. So don’t let the boys get hot!”
The Flamingos will get to travel to face the top seed, North Texas SC, this Saturday. It’s a team they’ve gone 2-2 against in the regular season.
