Madison helping sister city with library

MADISON (WKOW) — The city of Madison is partnering with a city in West Africa to help build a library.

The entire country of the The Gambia has only one public library. Kanifing is the largest city in the country and it’s one of Madison’s sister cities.

Kanifing’s mayor visited Madison last year and toured the Central Public Library. Now he’s taking that inspiration to build a library in his city to provide a safe place for students to study and learn.

“I cannot exaggerate the impact this would have on young people in my community that I’m from if we’re able to pull this project off,” said Jerreth Kujabi, President of Madison Kanifing Sister City.

Madison is not providing any financial assistance for the project but staff from the Madison Public Libraries will help design the library in Kanifing.

Madison has nine sister cities around the world. The relationship with the Gambia started in 2016 due to the high populations Gambian in Madison.
