Verona boys’ soccer looking forward to first WIAA tourney in program history

The Verona boys’ soccer team is heading to its first-ever state tournament.  After running through conference play undefeated, the Wildcats have earned the top seed in Division 1.

In addition to a Big 8 schedule without a loss, Verona took down Madison West, 1-0, in the sectional final.  They’re 19-1-2 heading into the wiaa tournament where they’ll face the four seed, Kenosha Tremper, who is 11-7-2 overall.  The Wildcats are honored just to be playing.

“Yeah there’s no question it’s exciting for the school and the program itself,” said Verona boys’ soccer coach Chris Handrick. “It feels good. I think we are ecstatic to be able to have that opportunity and represent the school.”

“We’ve been playing with the same core group of seniors the past three years,” said senior forward Eliot Popkewitz. “And we’ve been practicing hard together over that time. It’s paid off, I guess, so far and hopefully we are able to continue a great season.”
