MADISON (WKOW) — A former Madison mayor died unexpectedly this weekend.
According to an online obituary, Joel Skornicka died on Saturday, November 16. Funeral services are pending.
Skornicka was mayor of Madison from 1979 to 1983, replacing Paul Soglin after his first tenure as mayor.
A report from UW-Madison says Skornicka held a career in public higher education, then later created the Skornicka Public Service Award to support civic-minded students at UW.
Skornicka is a UW alum, graduating with a degree in political science in 1959 and a masters in public policy and administration in 1975.

According to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal, Skornicka’s long-time partner said he died of a suspected blood clot early Saturday morning.
