Sheriff: Darlington woman arrested after hitting Amish buggy

BELMONT (WKOW) — A Darlington woman was arrested after she allegedly crashed into an Amish buggy Sunday night in the town of Belmont.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, 56-year-old Jeanne M. Halvorson was driving southbound on State Highway 126 when she hit the Amish buggy and failed to stop around 6:15 p.m.

Sheriff’s officials say Halvorson was cited for 1st offense OWI and Failure to Notify Police of Accident, among other citations. She was arrested for Criminal Damage to Property and was transported to the Lafayette County Jail.

Sheriff Reg Gill tells 27 News that the Amish buggy was destroyed and a Horse had to be put down. Two people inside the buggy were checked by EMS but not sent to the hospital. Halvorson’s 2003 Chevrolet was damaged and towed from the scene.
