WI communities issue warnings before IL marijuana laws change

RACINE COUNTY (WKOW) -- In less than one month marijuana will be legally sold in Illinois. Before those sales begin, authorities on both sides of the state line are sending out warnings.

Under the new Illinois law, adults 21 years and older will be able to legally purchase and carry up to 30 grams of cannabis leaf, five grams of cannabis concentrate, and 500mg of cannabis infused products.

Even if someone legally buys marijuana in Illinois, it is illegal to smoke it in a vehicle and also to bring it into Wisconsin.

"The State of Wisconsin has not legalized marijuana. If you're going to bring that here into our state specifically to Racine County and we find it, we're going to arrest you for it," said Racine County Sheriff Chris Schmaling.

The Illinois law takes effect January 1.
