BELOIT (WKOW) -- New jobs will be coming to the city of Beloit just in time for the 2020 holiday season.
On Monday, Amazon announced the new one-million-square-foot fulfillment center will create 500 new full-time jobs. Employees will pick, package and ship large customer items like sports equipment, patio furniture, bicycles and other larger household goods. The company will pay its employees 15 dollars an hour with comprehensive benefits.
In December, the city of Beloit confirmed the site will be constructed on the site next to Specialty Tools Inc., just off Interstates 39, 43 and 90.
The Greater Beloit Economic Development Corporation sold the land to Amazon in December. Peyton Paisley, WI, LLC, a division of USAA, bought the 80 acres on Gateway Boulevard for $80 according to a press release from the city of Beloit.
"A project of this magnitude is certainly a game-changer for Beloit," said City Manager Lori Curtis Luther.
Even if you don't work for Amazon, taxpayers will see other benefits down the road. Curtis Luther said by 2024 the city hopes to offer property tax breaks for residents and possibly adding more police officers.
"That may seem far off, but really, that's just two years away and I think that's going to be a great opportunity for us," she said.
The Greater Beloit Economic Development Corporation said one challenge will be housing new employees.
"We have a lack of housing right now and we'd like to see more housing across the board, whether it's professional housing or workers housing," said Andrew Janke, Executive Director for GBEDC.
