Train cars pile up after derailment in western Wisconsin

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Dunn County sheriff's officials say no one was hurt and there have been no reports of any hazardous spills after a train derailed Sunday afternoon near Eau Claire.

Authorities say the Union Pacific train was headed east when about 35 cars went off the rails. 18 of them were involved in a pileup.

Crews are out evaluating the derailment and roads are still closed.


DUNN COUNTY (WKOW) -- A train derailed Sunday afternoon in western Wisconsin.

WQOW in Eau Claire is reporting fire officials in Menomonie responded to the derailment in Dunn County, near the village of Knapp.

Firefighters say about 18 train cars are piled alongside the tracks.

No one was hurt, but traffic is being detoured right now. State transportation officials say all lanes of Highway 12 and County Q in Dunn County are blocked.

KSTP-TV reports the derailment happened around 4 p.m.
