MADISON (WKOW) --- A top Democrat believes a new watchdog report revealing the President broke the law when withholding U.S. Military aid to Ukraine will give the party more leverage to argue their case this election year.

Chair of the Democratic National Committee Tom Perez told 27 News the new revelations will only harm President Trump's credibility in the 2020 elections.

“They said this president broke the law when they withheld aid to Ukraine, we need a president who's going to make us safer, a president who unites us, doesn't divide us and every candidate understands that. They understand that this election is bigger than them,” said Perez.

The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office told the Trump administration it broke the law when it froze military aid to Ukraine.

The president's decision to withhold nearly $400 million in military aid will be a central focus in the Senate impeachment trial.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson continues to defend the president's actions calling the articles of impeachment “sloppy.”

“These are highly-flawed articles of impeachment. I see nothing impeachable from what I’ve seen in the press. Now, I’ll listen with an open mind to what they present, but it’s not the Senate’s job to go dig up additional information the House didn’t take time to find,” said Johnson.

Wisconsin voters show little change in how they view impeachment in the latest Marquette University Law School Poll, 49% of voters are against convicting the president and removing him from office compared 44% who support it.
